Pollarding

Pollarding

Pollarding encourages growth of lateral branches by cutting off a tree stem or minor branches six to 10 feet above ground level. The tree is then allowed to regrow but will require regular follow-up pruning to maintain it. Pollarding is not usually an effective method of curbing the growth of older and taller trees but, because they are kept in a partly juvenile state, pollards can live much longer than, and do not develop the weight and windage of, maiden trees.
